Sue Silva – Malawi Mission

Prayers are need at this time for the people of Bangula, the town where Sue helps the widows and the prisoners. This little town, which is close to the Mission, has been devastated by a severe flood and has been declared a disaster. Many buildings and livestock are lost, having received 115 mm of rain in 1 ½ hours. The people have survived and are now combing the ruins for anything that might be salvaged. Infrastructure is damaged, and the highway south of Bangula remains cut off from the rest of Malawi. Communications are very difficult as well. Please keep Sue and the staff at the mission in your prayers that they may have the strength to help the people of Bangula.

Sue’s latest March 1 e-mail about the devastating flood in the nearest town of Bangula and her work with the mission is available at the back of the Sanctuary. Sue appreciates our concerns for the mission and our continued prayers. Please help yourselves to her recent e-mail.

Soul Food Suppers

Our program of family suppers has gathered 17 Applewood families with kids and teens so far. We are grateful for the families who have hosted a dinner at their home, often for people they didn’t know.

Hosts are supported in offering the dinner by our Visioning project. In a culture where families are scattered at different schools, jobs and demands, recognizing good friends at church is the start to strong community. Parents’ eagerness to make these new friends sends a strong message of the value of Christian life to their children. A new round of Soul Food Suppers is being organized, and invitations by e-mail and phone will go out for these families to choose their best dates. Families: by all means, please let Carolyn Smith know you’re interested in participating – we’d love to have you around a table!

The Mississauga Food Bank

Thank you to the youth of our congregation for their support of the foodbbank. Nearly 800,000 Canadians a month use the food bank. 13.6% of these people have jobs but can’t afford to feed their families. 37% are children. Please consider being a regular donor.

Keeping our Kitchen Kleen

Please take home your containers or utensils from the kitchen as soon after an event as possible. They will be placed on the counter beside the oven closest to the Parlour.

Unlabelled items are put in the lost and found after 3 weeks.

Lost and Found

Did you know that Applewood has a lost and found bin? It is located in the Narthex coat area, near the recycling cupboard. You might want to take a look in it if you have lost something recently – or maybe a while ago! The bin gets emptied every once in a while and the items are donated to charities such as Goodwill, so please check the bin if something has recently gone astray.

If you come across lost items around the church, please leave them in the bin.

Media in Worship

Five years ago, we began using media in worship. Media enhances the worship experience through videos and images. Many resources are available now for us to use, for example, our M&S moments. In the last two years, the soundboard, projector and our laptops have been upgraded. In order for the projections to be adequately seen, the blinds at the front of the Sanctuary need to be drawn. At appropriate times in worship, the screen will be raised in order to highlight the Last Supper tapestry. This is a message from your Worship Committee at work.

Please be reminded that the Little Yellow Bus shuttle service is available each Sunday. Park in the west lot of the Applewood Village Plaza (near Shopper’s Drug Mart) for pickup and dropoff. Please observe all signs and park in permitted areas of the plaza only. Thank you.
